The Work at Height Regulations 2005 require an assessment to be undertaken before starting any work at height. If the assessment confirms that there is no alternative to working at height, then suitable access equipment should be selected, taking into account the nature of the work.
Scaffold Construction: 1. System scaffolding should be designed and erected in accordance with the manufacturer?s or supplier?s Handbook. 2. Any proposed modifications or alterations, outwith a scaffolding manufacturer?s guidelines should be designed by a competent person. 3. Inspection of designed scaffolding should be carried out by
a competent person. 4. Scaffolding should be clearly signed to indicate when they are not in use.
Safety Checklist: 1. Have scaffolds been erected, altered and dismantled by competent persons?
2. Is there safe access to the scaffold platform? 3. Are all uprights provided with suitable bases to prevent slipping or sinking? 4. Are all uprights, ledgers, braces and struts securely in position? 5. If required, is the scaffold firmly secured to the building? 6. Are there adequate and appropriate guard-rails and toe-boards in place? 7. Are the work platforms fully boarded and arranged to avoid tipping or tripping? 8. Are there effective barriers or warning notices in place to prevent people from using incomplete or unsafe scaffolding? 9. Has the scaffolding been designed and constructed to cope with the load required and is this evenly distributed? 10. Does a competent person inspect the scaffolding regularly (once per week), after it has been altered and following extreme weather?
1. Scaffold inspections should be conducted by an appropriately qualified person. 2. Scaffold register should note defects and corrective actions taken.
