Handling Chemicals Safely. ? All chemicals should be clearly marked ? Be aware of the storage requirements of each type ? Take extreme care when mixing chemicals ? Keep away from heat and flames ? Avoid oral contact of any kind ? Never inhale ? Avoid contact with skin and eyes

Chemical Checklist. ? Read and understand the label before opening any container ? Double-check that the chemical you are opening is the one required ? Consider the hazards, including violent reactions between chemicals ? Open container carefully in a well ventilated area ? Always wear appropriate protective clothing ? Take extreme care whilst using hazardous chemicals ? Use method which reduces risk of inhalation, ingestion or contact with skin, eyes and clothing ? Never eat, drink or smoke whilst handling chemicals ? Always seal container tightly after use

Toxic. Toxic material which may cause life threatening effects even in small amounts and with short exposure. ? Do not swallow the material, allow it to come into contact with skin or breathe it ? Wear protective clothing
Health Hazard. May cause serious and prolonged health effects on short or long term exposure. ? Do not swallow the material, allow it to come into contact with skin or breathe it ? Includes carcinogenic and radioactive materials amongst others ? Wear protective clothing
Irritant. May cause irritation (redness, rash) or less serious toxicity. Can cause acute toxicity if ingested or inhaled. ? Keep away from skin and eyes ? Avoid release to the environment
Corrosive. Corrosive material which may cause skin burns and permanent eye damage ? Avoid contact with skin and eyes ? Do not breathe vapours or sprays ? Wear protective clothing
Compressed Gas. Contains gas under pressure. Gas released may be very cold. Gas container may explode if heated. ? Do not heat containers ? Avoid contact with skin and eyes
Environmental Hazard. Toxic to aquatic organisms and may cause long lasting effects to ecosystems ? Avoid release to the environment
